Tools and Steps for Lost-Wax-Casting
Terms to Know:
Impression (Negative Relief) - An indent or cavity left as a result of pressing a hard object into a softer material.
Relief - A design made from raised and recessed shapes, lines, and textures (usually a flat background and a design protruding out
Wax Model (positive) - The finished figure ready for casting
Pattern/Repetition - A mark or design that repeats in a planned way
Sprue- A thin "straw" of extruded wax that connects the wax model to the base (button) and becomes the channel for metal to flow into the mold
Alcohol Lamp- A heat source use for shaping and fusing wax pieces together
Wax Carving tools- (Dental tools) used to bring the heat to the wax for shaping, carving, fusing, etc.
Button (Flask Base) - The rubber bottom part of the flask, used as a foundation for spruing and then becomes the funnel for pouring metal into the mold
Flask- A metal cylinder that surrounds the wax model and becomes a cup to hold the plaster mold
Investment - Heat resistant plaster mixed with water then poured into the flask, it quickly sets-up (hardens), and then is fired to melt away the wax, becoming the mold
Bell Jar Vacuum - A machine used to suck the air out of the plaster (before it has set-up)
Kiln (Burn-Out) - An oven like box used to heat the flasks and burn away all the wax model
Crucible- A ceramic vessel used to melt and pour metal
Pewter (550 melting temp) - A metal alloy consisting of Tin, Antimony, and Copper
Centrifuge - A machine that holds a crucible on one side and a mold on the other. It is wound on a spring so that when it is released it spins very fast and forces the metal into the mold
