Steps, Tools, and Criteria:
Time to Wear gloves:
- Start with paper to allow for a free flow of ideas.
- Use 4x4 inch, sheets of paper to draw out multiple ideas for practice cutting and folding.
- Think about symmetry, imagery, and the way metal is used as jewelry
- Consider how you can cut and fold the metal in order to extend its form to the point that the original shape is unrecognizable.
- Keep in mind the use of shading for later on (where do you want the highlights?)
- Make a second copy to glue your final project (keep the original to turn in with final)
- Glue your second copy to the metal using rubber cement.
- Use a center punch to dimple the metal then use the drill press to drill a hole through the metal.
- Saw inner cuts first.
- Cut out your design but DO NOT CUT ANY METAL AWAY.
- Anneal the metal using the gas/air torch
- Use pliers to carefully pop-up or change the plane of the metal to allow access for filing
- File and sand the edges
- Use pliers, leather mallet, dowels, and doming/dapping blocks to carefully reshape annealed metal into the final position
Time to Wear gloves:
- Now is the time to scour (+soap) your metal thoroughly.
- Use liver and sulfur to patina your project.
- Use latex gloves when handling to avoid finger prints the metal until you seal it.
- Remove the oxidized layer in select sections using steel wool or sand with wet 600 sand paper
- Spray seal your project ( 2 coats)
- Place the contact side upwards first and spray an even layer going back and forth, test for dryness and repeat.
