Cold Connections: Rivets
What is a Cold Connection? A method for joining metal, wood, plastic or other non heat enduring materials. Done late in the process so that you can work independently on the pieces before joining.
What are Tabs? Metal pieces that extend out and can be folded or bent over to hold metal pieces together (Think of the construction of a cardboard box)
What is Riveting? A rivet is a permanent mechanical fastener consisting of a smooth cylindrical shaft (rod) with a head on one end. The end opposite is "upset" or expanded to hold the metal pieces together
What is tube Riveting? A hollow tube is inserted into a hole, then the ends are rounded or rolled out to hold the metal pieces together |
1. Drill the holes in the top layer
2. Place the layers together and drill ONE hole through both layers 3. set the rivet 4. Drill a hole through a second hole 5. Set the second rivet 6. Drill and set the remaining holes and rivets |
