"McQueen has been credited with bringing drama and extravagance to the catwalk. He used new technology and innovation to add a different twist to his shows and often shocked and surprised audiences. The silhouettes that he created have been credited for adding a sense of fantasy and rebellion to fashion."
Marc Chagall was beloved for his dream-like landscape paintings with their hyper-saturated colors, populated with weightless characters. Inspired by music’s ability to fill boundless spaces, his paintings became the basis for costume designs in a 1942 in New York Operas and Ballet performances.

Steps & Requirements of the Project:
- Groups must design a Top, a Bottom (a dress counts as both), or an Outer item (jacket, cape, hat...)
- To complete the look... groups may bring shoes, jewelry, music, make up, props, etc.
- Groups CANNOT PURCHASE these items, you MUST BE RESOURCEFUL and use what you already have.
- Work together, value each other's input, participation and contributions, which will be considered in your final grade.
- Have fun, think outside the box, and yet manage your time wisely so you can complete the look.
Design Planning Steps Include:
Equipment & Techniques:
- Sewing: (Needle & Thread, 2 Sewing Machines)
- Fabric: Ms Ferrell has a collection of 80's patterns and fabric as a starting point (You may redesign existing garments) but you CANNOT BUY anything for this project
- Armatures: create structure with Wire, Chicken Wire, Screen/Mesh, Cardboard, Paper Mache...to give it a more sculptural/off the body look. - this can take some time so plan accordingly
- Adhesives - Glue, Hot Glue, Staples, Safety Pins, Tape (should be used sparingly/invisible part of your final piece
- Embellishments- Colored Paper, feathers, repurposed items, yarn... Ms. Ferrell can provide some things but you may need to raid your craft cupboards at home (do not buy items for this project)
The Presentation: "Fashion Show"
Choose from 4 Presentation Roles:
* Each group member must participate (Each group will only have 3-4 minutes to present)
1. Fit Model/Choreographer
(center stage, movement to showcase the final garments) 2. Photographer/Marketer (document the process & finished garments + Post to social media #LosalFashion) 3. Music/Script Reader (Write a short artist statement describing the finished look, your groups intentions and any challenges/successes- read it with your best lively announcer voice :-) 4. Hair/Makeup/Props/Choreography (Prep the Model and help complete the look with make-up, shoes, or other props brought from home or made.) |
